The human mind is naturally curious, always seeking to understand the intricacies of situations and circumstances. However, it’s important to remember that when interacting with others, we’re not merely dealing with logical beings, but with individuals who are guided by both logic and emotions.

A valuable virtue we can all embrace is to refrain from questioning the feelings of others, especially in our day-to-day conversations. Let me illustrate this with an anecdote: Recently, a friend and I had the privilege of conversing with an 87-year-old gentleman who shared his experiences of the migration from Pakistan.

His narrative painted a vivid picture of the hardships endured during that tumultuous period. He recounted the chaos and uncertainty that gripped entire communities as they faced the imminent threat of violence and displacement. Families were torn apart, forced to make split-second decisions with far-reaching consequences.

To truly comprehend the depth of such experiences, one must empathize with the emotions involved.

Consider this scenario: Imagine receiving a message informing you that you have just four hours to catch the last train out of your country due to the looming threat of civil war. You’re forced to leave behind everything you’ve built — your home, possessions, and even loved ones — with little time to process the overwhelming emotions that accompany such a decision.

In the chaos of departure, decisions must be made hastily, belongings prioritized, and goodbyes left unsaid. This abrupt upheaval, coupled with uncertainty about the future, places an immense emotional burden on individuals and families alike. Despite the challenges, many like the wise man we spoke to chose to forge ahead, rebuilding their lives from scratch in unfamiliar territories.

However, it’s disheartening when others, unaware of the full context or the depth of emotional turmoil, offer unsolicited advice or question decisions made in such trying circumstances. The wise man we met recounted how even his own family members often failed to grasp the enormity of his experiences, opting instead to critique his choices without understanding the challenges he faced.

Indeed, we may all be guilty at times of disregarding or trivializing the feelings of those around us, either by questioning their emotions or offering ill-informed advice. Emotions are deeply personal and complex, defying simple categorization as right or wrong. When we invalidate someone’s feelings through interrogation or dismissiveness, we undermine their lived experiences and diminish their sense of self-worth.

In conclusion, let us strive to cultivate empathy and understanding in our interactions with others, acknowledging the validity of their emotions without judgment or criticism. By respecting the feelings of those around us, we foster a culture of compassion and mutual support, enriching both our relationships and our collective humanity.
